The May birthstone is the gem of faithfulness and unchanging love. The name, emerald, is derived from the Greek word meaning "green stone". Emeralds range in color from very light to very dark green, sometimes displaying blue or yellow tints. Only the finest qualities are transparent. Often the emerald is clouded by inclusions, but these are not necessarily classified as faults. Emeralds are a relatively soft gem that should be worn with care. Emeralds are commonly mined in Columbia, Brazil and Africa.
